Police in Forsyth County, Georgia, have released a disturbing body camera video showing the moment a newborn baby girl was found alive after she was abandoned in a plastic grocery bag earlier this month.

The infant, temporarily named India, was found in a bag in the Georgia woodland with her umbilical cord still attached.

Footage shows an officer rushing to get his gloves on before tearing open the bag as the baby inside can be heard wailing.

A resident who was at the scene told the officer that he heard the newborn crying from his home nearby.

When the officer opened the bag, it seemed to startle the baby and she started crying again. The officer comforted her saying: “Oh I’m sorry. I’m so sorry…oh look how precious you are.”

After removing the newborn from the bag, rescue workers cut off what appears to be an umbilical cord, then wrapped her in a blanket.

India was found in good condition and continues to be doing well while authorities search for information about her identity. The baby has been placed into the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services.

Sharing the video, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office wrote: “We are happy to report that Baby India is thriving. We release this footage in hopes to receive credible information on the identity of Baby India and to show how important it is to find closure in this case.”

Police also gave a reminder that Georgia has a “Safe Haven law”. The Safe Haven law “allows a child’s mother to leave her baby, up to 30 days old, with an employee of any medical facility including any hospital, institutional infirmary, health center or birthing center in Georgia without prosecution.”
