The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engineer Adekunle Makolu, said provision of functional critical infrastructure is imperative for the smooth running of economic activities, governance and wellbeing of citizens of a country.

He said this was the reason why the Society chose the theme of this year’s annual conference of the NSE, which is, ‘‘Building Resilient Infrastructure to promote sustainable industrial growth.’’

The President was speaking at the 2019 annual conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Society of Engineers holding in Kano.

“Resilience and sustainability are key words that are vital for infrastructural delivery, therefore, a nation that keenly desires accelerated growth and development must try to build resilient engineering infrastructure,” he said.

He said the conference will focus on proffering solution to the infrastructural deficit challenge of the country.

The Society therefore re-launched the 2017 Nigeria infrastructure scorecard, while saying that the government had failed to implement it.

In his address, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State, reaffirmed his commitment to the Nigerian Society of Engineers in ensuring efficiency and productivity in the country.

Ganduje pointed out that engineering is paramount to development of the country.

“Over the years, engineers are seen as beacons of development. Kano State has benefited immensely from the contributions made by them. When we had issues like traffic jams on our roads, particularly zoo road and Murtala Specialists Hospital, we brainstormed alongside the engineers and came up with a lasting solution, thereby constructing an underground tunnel which is ongoing,”’ he said.

He added that his administration was on the move to construct a first-class cancer treatment hospital in the state in order to reduce medical tourism in Nigeria.

In appreciation, the president of NSE, Engr. Adekunle Makolu presented an award to the governor for his unrelenting efforts and dedication towards the development of the state.
