Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has gifted Zane Tetevano his NRL 2019 premiership ring after the team’s Grand Final victory.

His selfless gesture comes after the prop watched the stunning 14-8 win against the Canberra Raiders from the sidelines at ANZ Stadium on Sunday night.

The 28-year-old posted an image of the ring on his Instagram before celebrating his team’s triumph at Hordern Pavilion.

Hooker Jake Friend, who hadn’t played for 11 weeks and had just returned from a calf injury, was chosen to play in place of Tetevano.

Robinson had to break the news to Tetevano about sitting out of the decider in what he described as the ‘toughest moment of the week’.

But Tetevano said he ‘can’t be happier’ for his teammates after sitting out of the match.

‘I’m so stoked. The boys played well and it was definitely a tough game,’ he said.

‘It was nerve wracking watching, but I can’t be happier. It was scary. It was a tough game, a street fight.

‘It was at training and we were just making sure Jakey was ready to play and he was ready to play tonight. As you saw he played over 30 minutes and he delivered.’

Tetevano had not missed a game in last year’s title and had only sat out of two games before Sunday night’s final.

He is the only regular Roosters first grader without a contract for 2020.

Tetevano’s management and the Roosters began discussing a new deal for him in July, with a number of rival clubs eyeing out the player.
